Yesterday Ethiopia changed the way they are doing adoptions. Their program used to entail one parent flying over for the embassy appointment. (This is after you have already been approved to adopt your child by the Ethiopian government.) Now, both parents must fly over for the court appointment. Then, if you are approved, you will have to fly back over a couple of months later to pick up your child and I think the embassy appointment. Some people might not think this is a big deal. This is what I think. We ruled out Russia for this exact reason (and the fetal alcohol syndrome). A lot of people don't pass court the first time. Does this mean if we don't pass on the first go, we have to stay in Ethiopia until we do? After you get your referral all you want to do is pick up your child and bring them home. Can you imagine meeting your child and then leaving them there for a couple of months? Not to mention the additional cost. This would add on at least $7,000 to the adoption total. If we had money to cover our adoption this wouldn't be an issue. Unfortunately, this is an issue. I was so upset when I found out. My heart is in Ethiopia. You can't imagine how many adoption stories I have read pertaining to Ethiopia. How many hours I watched youtube gottcha day's and cried. I was so interested. I am still so interested. But I feel like God just keeps shutting doors.
Should we wait 3 years and adopt from Rwanda (you have to be married for 5 years)? Should we adopt domestically? We looked into Taiwan but that program is very expensive. Korea, we are too fat for. Haiti has a really slow program.
I guess we are going to start looking at domestic adoptions. I am nervous. What if a birth mother doesn't pick us? What if they change their mind? It costs about the same as an Ethiopian adoption.
This sucks. Everyone says that adoption is like a roller coaster, but so far ours has been a constant fall down a hill.
My friends just flew out to Ethiopia yesterday to bring home their twin baby boys. I will be praying for your family that you have a similar situation in the not too distant future...
